Alpha Legion Vs Imperial Guard

Deployment: In this Assassination mission the alpha legion must eliminate the imperial guard commander, whilst preserving their own force. They have infiltrated two squads of havocs with heavy bolters and missile launchers so they have clear firing lines into the guard positions. They also have a squad of cultists led by one of their lieutenants ready to assault the factory. The imperial guard start with their commander in the centre atop the capitol, missile launcher squads in the silos and factory, and the rest of the army scattered around occupying each of the buildings.

Alpha Legion Turn 1: The havocs pick their targets, opening the battle with a fusillade that kills most of a missile and command squad.

The cultists pile into the unsuspecting guardsmen, quickly butchering most and then chasing after the survivors.

Meanwhile the lieutenant splits off to attack the platoon command squad, contemptuously dodging the officers power sword before pulverizing them one by one and efficiently dispatching the survivors as they try to flee.

Imperial Guard Turn 1: The surviving missile team bravely stand their ground and fire into the havocs below, mortally wounding 2 with their accurate krak missiles.

In the factory the chimera lumbers through the wall and together with the 2nd missile squad fires incessantly at the chaos lieutenant, gunning the arrogant astartes down!

Alpha Legion Turn 2: The imperial guard captain looks out from his ruin as the chaos terminators teleport in. Their eyes meet as the alpha legionaries identify the target, raise their combi bolters, and obliterate the command squad.

The havocs get revenge and annihilate the missile launcher squad in the silos, whilst the squad in the factory is overcome by the tide of cultists.

Imperial Guard Turn 2: Marching at the double to the sound of the guns, the imperial guard veterans return from their patrol. They neatly form a firing line alongside the special weapons squad and fire their meltaguns point blank at the terminators, bringing down all but 1 of these mighty warriors.

Another squad of veterans do similar deadly work, dispatching 3 of the chaos havocs with their grenade launchers!

The guardsman squads in the warehouse and capitol form a firing line and scythe through the cultists across the street in the factory.

Alpha Legion Turn 3: The lone surviving chosen terminator lumbers around and unleashes its heavy flamer.

Amazingly 3 of the veterans hit the deck at precisely the right moment and bolt away in terror, singed but alive, before the chaos champion can close in for the kill.

Meanwhile the surviving havocs unleash a salvo at the veterans in the fountain forcing them back towards the board edge, and the remains of the cultists fire their las pistols with unerring accuracy, gunning down and putting to flight the guardsmen in the capitol. The second chaos leuitenant leading another mob of cultists advances towards the factory from the board edge.

Imperial Guard Turn 3: The special weapons squad bravely hold their ground, pouring flamer and lasgun rounds into the back of the terminator, finally bringing the behemoth down.

With stoic tenacity the chimera crew pull back and blaze away at the chaos lieutenant. Repeated heavy bolter and multi laser rounds find their mark, and the chaos champion is ground into the dust.

Meanwhile the last of the havocs by the fountain and first wave of cultists are eliminated, as more veterans return from reconnaissance and join the fray.

Alpha Legion Turn 4: The legions obliterator has been watching the battle unfold. As 3 guardsmen run past carrying lethal meltaguns he decides to eliminate the threat and calmly switches to full auto, cutting them all down.

Imperial Guard Turn 4: The remaining veterans don't hesitate as this new threat emerges. They raise storm bolters, grenade launchers and humble lasguns, stand their ground, and give them hell.

Turn 5 & 6: A long range salvo from the havocs heavy bolters and grenade launchers finishes off another veteran squad.

The leaderless cultists scramble forwards to seek shelter in the factory. The guard firing at targets that present themselves, but gradually the battle peters out and the chaos forces withdraw. The enemy HQ has been eliminated, but as so many alpha legionaries lie dead this battle can only be considered a draw.*

*We tweaked the assassination scenario to better accommodate the infiltrating alpha legion, and realized afterwards that we misread how victory points are calculated. This battle should have been a chaos victory, but with the guard having vulnerable HQ's unable to hide as independent characters were not sure how the result could be anything else and this seems a fairer outcome.
