Carolingians Vs Byzantines

Deployment: The byzantine line stretches from the field on the left to the gentle hill on the right. Bow armed warriors hold the hill, whilst levy javelinmen shelter in the field. Between them are levy slingers with the tagmatic mounted hearthguard in reserve. A steep hill dominates the carolingian deployment. To its left and right they have a unit of warriors and bowmen. In the centre they have another weak unit of warriors, whilst ready to swing out on the far right they have an extra strong unit of mounted hearthguard.*

Byzantine Turn 1: The levy and hearthguard advance, but the slingers salvo is to no avail as the carolingian warriors raise their shields and weather the storm using the Defensor ability.

Carolingian Turn 1: With shields still raised the warriors advance. The bowmen take possession of the hill and give the byzantine hearthguard a volley using Vinco, and down two of them. The carolingians own hearthguard race ahead to threaten the byzantine flank.

Byzantine Turn 2: The slingers are saved by the levy javelinmen. Together they use a Massed Volley and the carolingian warriors start to fall. The Byzantine commander and hearthguard pull back to safety away from the enemy cavalry.

Carolingian Turn 2: The hearthguard charge straight up the hill and into the byzantine bowmen. A Disordering Volley arrests the momentum of the charge and the byzantine warriors lose only a handful of men before retreating in good order.

Turn 3: The byzantine javelinmen finish off the warriors, and the tagmatic cavalry race ahead again to threaten the bowmen. Unfortunately they are shot down in a hail of arrows before they can make contact. The carolingian commander charges forward to finish off the weakened byzantine archers, but with their backs to the wall they fight in a Frenzy and get through the melee with no losses.

Turn 4: Dashing over the hill, the carolingian milites use Illusio to run down the slingers. But the levy make it a bloody victory, dragging down two of the horsemen.

Byzantine Turn 5: The strategos bravely charges his opposite number , and the frank is only saved by the sacrifice of his bodyguard.

Carolingian Turn 5: Dispensing with all ceremony and chivalry, the warrior bowmen shoot the exhausted enemy commander down like a dog. The milites charge the byzantine archers again and this time slaughter three of them. With the strategos dead and only 1 effective unit left, the byzantines quit the field. Carolingians win!

* in saga terms the byzantines are 'last romans'. And yes those are GW riders of rohan being used as carolingian franks. To me they're close enough, look pretty, and i had a box of them lying around.
